Website dos and don’ts I learned the hard way

Note. November 3, 2026
Here’s what I didn’t know when I started building websites 10+ years ago. And it can save you weeks of indecision, headaches, and embarrassment 🫣

DO:

✅ Build for your ideal clients – not everyone.
✅ Decide what job the website has in your sales funnel.
✅ Choose one clear action you want visitors to take.
✅ Make an ugly prototype on paper or in your favourite tool like Miro.
✅ Build it with a simple no-code tool like Wix.
✅ Illustrate your points with real photos and diagrams.
✅ Use simple words, fonts, and structure.
✅ Nail the mobile version.
✅ Implement basic SEO.

DON’T:

⛔ Write about yourself more than your clients and their needs.
⛔ Hire developers and designers for a simple marketing website.
⛔ Copy your competitors.
⛔ Outsource your thinking and copy to AI.
⛔ Try to sound smart.
⛔ Fill it with decorative stock or AI-generated images.
⛔ Use fancy fonts or a complex structure.

A website is not an art object.
It’s a tool with a specific job.

Don’t overthink it. Don’t overcomplicate it. Don’t overdesign it.

Share this with a founder who needs it.

P.S. Still feel like you can’t build a website on your own? Get in touch. I can do it for you (if you are in climate & nature 🌍).
